Former President Bill Clinton during a talk with the students in Hanoi On the occasion of the visit to Vietnam and 15th anniversary of Vietnam-US relations, this morning (14/11), former U.S. President William J. Clinton was in Hanoi to attend the meeting with the students of Foreign Trade University and Institute for International Relation. Former President Clinton is shaking hands with Vietnamese students During the meeting, the former US President shared his thoughts about the future of the Vietnam – US relationship and the potential for the relationship, saying that he hoped citizens of the two countries, especially young people, would contribute to making the relationship more beautiful. Bill Clinton was born in 1946, was U.S 42nd president from 1993 to 2001. He was considered the one who laid the foundation for the normalization of Vietnam - the U.S relation for the last 15 years. On March 2rd 1994, the administration of President Bill Clinton decided to lift the embargo towards Vietnam and on 11 July 1995, the two countries formally normalized relations. In November 2000, Bill Clinton was the first U.S. president to visit Vietnam since the war between the two countries ended. This event was considered a milestone in promoting bilateral relations, closed painful past between the two nations. In Hanoi, Mr. Clinton declared: "The past just comes before but cannot decide the future". This trip to Hanoi was his second one since Clinton resigned in 2001. The last visit was in 2005 when he went to Vietnam to promote the activities of the Clinton Foundation. |
